What Is an Ob-Gyn?
A doctor of obstetrics and gynecology, or OBGYN, is a physician trained to care for women and babies. They are experts on the female reproductive system and prenatal care, and are trained in laparoscopic surgery to operate on the uterus and ovaries with minimally invasive techniques.
OGBYNs are most commonly seen by expecting mothers, but we provide care for any woman with concerns about their sexual or reproductive health and women struggling with infertility.
What Do They Do?
An OBGYN is who to call if you have concerns about a pregnancy or your reproductive health, but they also help women with any female health concern. Common reasons patients need an OBGYN include:
- Annual wellness - an annual visit with an OBGYN includes a breast and pelvic exam and may include a pap smear depending on your doctor's recommendation.
- Menstruation issues - women with heavy or irregular bleeding should see their OGBYN to be examined.
- Birth control - Women have many options for birth control today, and an OBGYN can help determine the best birth control method for your body and lifestyle.
- STD screenings
- Infertility - If you have been struggling with infertility, an OBGYN can help determine the best way for you to conceive.
- Pregnancy and newborn care
Our OBGYN will also be an important resource to help you manage any chronic conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome or endometriosis pain. Even when you don't have a chronic condition or a current pregnancy, you should see your OBGYN at least annually for an exam.
