Understanding Laparoscopy: What to Expect from Your Gynecologist

Laparoscopy is also called laparoscopic surgery and is a minimally invasive procedure for detecting and treating various reproductive health conditions, such as endometriosis. The experienced providers at Capital Women's Care Division 66 in Bowie, Greenbelt, or North Bethesda, MD, perform laparoscopy using proven techniques that lead to less pain, faster recovery, and fewer complications than traditional surgery.

Purpose of Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive, minor surgical procedure used in the diagnosis and treatment of different female reproductive conditions. At our OBGYN offices in Bowie, Greenbelt, or North Bethesda, MD, laparoscopy is used to detect specific health issues, treat endometriosis, remove ovaries or growths on them, and perform hysterectomies.

Laparoscopy Procedure

We perform laparoscopy as an outpatient procedure so there is no hospital stay and patients can return home the same day. The procedure is carried out under general anesthesia, which means the patient is asleep and does not feel any pain or discomfort.

To perform the laparoscopy, an extremely small incision is made in the abdomen. Then a thin tube called a laparoscope is carefully inserted into the abdomen through the incision. A tiny lighted camera on the end of the laparoscope allows the doctor to examine the reproductive organs and identify any problems. Afterward, the laparoscope is removed and the incision is closed.

Post-procedure instructions will be provided before leaving the office. Most patients return for a follow-up appointment a few weeks after the laparoscopy to ensure the incision site is healing properly.

Benefits of Laparoscopy

There are multiple benefits to performing laparoscopy rather than traditional surgery. Some of the primary benefits and advantages include:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Less pain and discomfort
  • Only a small incision is made
  • Outpatient (no hospital stay)
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Fewer complications
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring

If you are dealing with a reproductive issue, laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive option for diagnosing and treating your condition.
